The Converted Church is the sixth episode of the first season of Ghost Hunters.

Synopsis

A Rhode Island couple claim that renovations to their home have stirred some otherworldly guests.

Site

Melissa Klebes and Justin Talarksi, a goth couple and friends of Steve's, bought and converted an old Unitarian church built in 1867 but abandoned in 1982. There was a previous par of homeowners before them. Justin mentions a fireplace located inside the house was from an old rectory that was next door.

Investigation

During the briefing, Justin says they keep hearing loud banging sounds at around 4 A.M., that shake the entire house and Melissa adds they sound metallic-like. In one instance, he was vacuuming around and happened to look up at a zombie sculpture that was lifted up in the air, did a twirl and landed on a table. Their cats also sense presences, judged by their defensive postures and behavior. They say they've seen the specter of an elderly man Also, an entryway door seems to open by itself.

The house is decorated with horror-movie posters and a variety of rubber heads and limbs, making for an eerie atmosphere. The plumbing is new, at least. Jason and Grant have the team do EMF and EVP sweeps and set up cameras. Andy later disproves the door opening by itself, showing Jason that when the outside door is shut, this causes the entryway door to click and swing open. Jason explains the noises as wood expanding and contracting in the 19th-century building in response to the vibrations of the church bell ringing.

Back at TAPS headquarters, Steve, Andy and Brian Harnois look over the video footage and discover an orb that is perfectly round and moves with seeming intelligence. But Jason shoots it down as either a bug or just a common electrical orb. The Findings: Although the house is spooky, it isn't haunted.
